Misiones

Misiones is often called one of the green jewels of South America because of its lush subtropical forests, waterfalls, and incredible biodiversity. Nestled in northeastern Argentina, it’s home to the famous Iguazú Falls, one of the largest and most spectacular waterfall systems in the world, as well as vast stretches of Atlantic Forest that shelter jaguars, toucans, and countless plant species.

? The province is also known for its Yerba Mate plantations, a cultural staple across Argentina and neighboring countries. Beyond nature, Misiones has a rich cultural heritage, with Jesuit Missions that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offering a glimpse into the region’s colonial past.

Misiones is one of Argentina’s richest biodiversity hotspots, home to over 120 species of mammals, 554 bird species, and rare animals like jaguars, tapirs, and howler monkeys. The dense subtropical forest provides refuge for species that have disappeared elsewhere in the country.

? Key Wildlife in Misiones

  • Jaguar (Panthera onca): Apex predator of the Atlantic Forest, critically endangered in Argentina. Misiones holds the country’s last viable population.

  • Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya): Known locally as carayá, these arboreal primates live in small groups, feeding on leaves, fruits, and flowers. Their loud calls echo through the forest canopy.

  • Pecarí (Tayassu pecari): Wild pig-like mammals that live in social groups. They are omnivores, eating fruits, roots, insects, and even small vertebrates.

  • Deer (Mazama americana and Blastocerus dichotomus): The brocket deer and marsh deer inhabit forest edges and wetlands. The marsh deer is vulnerable due to habitat loss.

  • Tapir (Tapirus terrestris): South America’s largest land mammal, vital for seed dispersal in the forest.

  • Birdlife: Includes toucans, harpy eagles, and over 550 other species, making Misiones a paradise for birdwatchers.

  • Reptiles and Amphibians: 79 reptile species and 55 amphibians thrive in rivers and wetlands.

?️ Conservation Challenges

  • Deforestation: Expansion of agriculture and logging threatens the Atlantic Forest.

  • Poaching: Jaguars, deer, and tapirs are targeted despite legal protections.

  • Habitat fragmentation: Roads and settlements isolate populations, reducing genetic diversity.

? Protected Areas

  • Iguazú National Park: UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for Iguazú Falls and jaguar conservation.

  • Urugua-í Provincial Park: Key refuge for tapirs and harpy eagles.

  • Yabotí Biosphere Reserve: Protects large tracts of Atlantic Forest and indigenous Guaraní communities.
